Veolia Environnement has been named as VQ Employer of the Year for England and VQ Large Employer of the Year at a prestigious event in Westminster.

The UK's leading environmental company was named as winner of the first ever employer-focused award in recognition of the £5 million investment and outstanding support it has provided to those undertaking vocational qualifications (VQs) within its workforce.

In the last five years, Veolia employees have achieved 8,653 NVQs and over 17,000 vocationally related qualifications including apprenticeships, health and safety, driving certificates, BTECs and ILM Management Awards. It is the leading provider of vocational qualifications in the recycling and waste management sector and its in-house training arm, Campus Veolia UK, was recently graded as'outstanding' by Ofsted.

Veolia was presented with its award at an event last night, which was hosted by the Government's Skills Minister, Matthew Hancock MP and former Education Secretary Lord Baker, the Chairman of independent education charity, the Edge Foundation, which leads VQ Day.

Skills Minister Matthew Hancock, congratulated Veolia on its phenomenal vocational investment, saying:

"Vocational qualifications provide immense benefits to both businesses and learners alike. I am delighted to be able to reward those who take part with the recognition they deserve, whether they are a business of any size or a learner who has started his own company."

Veolia's belief in the benefits of vocational training is evident from the way in which it supports employees to achieve qualifications. Most recently Campus Veolia worked to deliver Waste Management NVQs to all its employees working on the construction of the Olympic Park. It plans to roll this programme out to all of its supply chain, in all sectors, over the next two years.

Other recent developments have included the opening of a new training Campus in the West Midlands and the first'Veolia Mobile Learning Centre' a customised vehicle that takes learning to the workplace.

Robert Hunt, Executive Director, Veolia Environmental Services UK, said:

"Our people are central to our success and we are delighted that the investment we have made to ensure employees can reach their potential has been recognised. As the first recipient of the VQ Employer of the Year accolade and VQ Large Employer of the Year award, it shows how far we have come as a business but also serves as an opportunity to outline the significant commercial benefits that can be achieved in developing new vocational training programmes to meet business needs."

Jan Hodges, CEO of the Edge Foundation commented:

"There is a huge range of vocational qualifications available, and people can undertake these at any point in their life - something which Veolia has proved by implementing VQs across its entire workforce. We are delighted to shine a light on a company that places vocational learning at its core and importantly empowers its employees to get the edge in their future careers."

The VQ Employer of the Year Awards, form part of VQ Day, an annual celebration of people who gain vocational qualifications every year in the UK. It aims to celebrate practical and vocational achievements, not only for the individual but for UK PLC. From 16 year olds to those over 60, VQ Day celebrates the acquisition of new skills and encourages parity of esteem between high quality vocational qualifications and academic ones.

Held on the 5th June, the sixth annual VQ Day recognises the value of vocational qualifications and celebrate vocational achievement.
